Equipment

  • 1 Medium saucepan
  • 1 Whisk
  • 1 Measuring cups
  • 1 Measuring spoons
  • 1 Ladle

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter 4 tablespoons.
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth Or stock.
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt Adjust to taste.
  • ½ teaspoon paprika Optional.
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce Optional for color and flavor.

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.
  • Once the butter is melted, whisk in the all-purpose flour to make a roux. Stir continuously for about 2-3 minutes until the mixture is golden brown.
  • Slowly add the chicken broth to the roux while whisking continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
  • Continue to whisk the mixture until it starts to thicken, which should take about 3-5 minutes.
  • Stir in the onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, salt, and paprika. If using, add soy sauce for additional flavor and color.
  • Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning if necessary. If the gravy is too thick, add a little more chicken broth to reach the desired consistency.
  • Once the gravy is thickened to your liking, remove it from heat and serve hot.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, you can substitute the chicken broth with vegetable broth.
If you prefer a smoother gravy, blend the mixture after cooking and strain through a fine sieve.
This gravy can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week in an airtight container. Reheat on the stove over low heat, adding a splash of broth or water to loosen it up if necessary.
